Asian Inspired
This site in Magnolia was a challenging blank slate. The soils were extremely poor and compacted, and drainage towards the house had to be minimalized. The client communicated clearly the desire for a garden that would be interesting to the eye without being busy.
Before construction
Natural Washington granite was used for the paths and the stairs. We wanted to create a refined but naturalistic feeling influence by Japanese interpretation of the garden. Photo taken immediately after planting.
Relatively mature plant material was used to produce a sense of maturity to the garden. This photo was taken six months after planting.
A large area of groundcover (Rubus calcinoides in this case) maintains a sense of openness and quiet in a garden.
Colorful iris contrast beside the rough-hewn basin.
The curving path adds visual depth.
Another view shows full ground cover.
